The remodeling of the birthplace of KFC in Corbin, Kentucky, slated to be completed by Fall. Kentucky Fried Chicken , KFC as my granddaughter calls it, is her favorite place to eat. Two drumsticks, mashed potatoes & gravy and a biscuit. Once a week. So it's not just for tourists.
Getting excited to go to the Birthplace of KFC in Corbin.
Harland Sanders first served his famous fried chicken in 1932 in the middle of the Great Depression at a gas station he owned in North Corbin, Kentucky.
The dining area was named 'Sanders Court and Café' and was so successful that in 1936, the Governor of Kentucky, Ruby Laffoon granted Sanders the title of honorary Kentucky Colonel. When Sanders prepared his chicken in his restaurant in Corbin, he prepared the chicken in an iron skillet, which took about 30 minutes, too long for a restaurant operation. In 1939, Sanders changed the cooking process for his fried chicken by using a pressure cooker, resulting in a greatly reduced cooking time comparable to that of deep frying. During the same year, food critic Duncan Hines visited Sanders' restaurant and was so impressed he listed the place in "Adventures in Good Eating," his famous guide to restaurants throughout the US. In 1940, Sanders devised what came to be known as his Original Recipe®. According to Unusual Kentucky, Sanders named the original recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1951. The Sanders Court & Café served travelers, often those headed to Florida, so when a route planned in the 1950's, for what would become Interstate 75, bypassed Corbin, he sold his properties and traveled the United States to sell his chicken to restaurant owners. The first was Pete Harman in South Salt Lake City, Utah. They opened the nation's and world's first franchise"Kentucky Fried Chicken" outlet in 1952.
The Colonel's secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices that creates the famous 'finger lickin' good' chicken remains a trade secret held in a new safe.
